美國石溪大學夏令營 SBU Summer Camp

美國的夏令營眾多，讓人看得眼花撩亂，不知如何選起。我們依據多年的經驗提出幾個重點，相信會對您選擇夏令營有很大的幫助：主辦單位、每週活動天數、招生對象、課程內容、安全、參觀旅行及費用

• 主辦單位：由知名學校或單位舉辦的夏令營，師資及活動品質有一定水準，資源、設施等也齊全。偶爾有些營隊租借知名學校或單位的場地舉辦，但主辦單位並不是出借場地的單位，造成混淆；報名前請確認
• Organizations: Summer camps organized by well-established colleges will provide the college experiences and resources listed guarantee highly qualified teachers, facilities, and activities. However some summer camps will rent venues from well-known college facilities, sometimes this may cause confusion, so please be sure to confirm before registration.
• 每週活動天數：營隊時間越長，收費自然越貴；但是必須留意每週的活動天數。有些是上課五天，週末參觀旅遊，天天都有活動；有些週末則放牛吃草；不可不察
• Activity days in a week: The longer of the summer camp, the more expensive of the cost. However one must also pay attention to the activities of each day. Some camps are having classes five days a week then weekend is planning for sightseeing and experiencing American cultures. But some are no or limited arrangement during the weekend.
• 招生對象：以國際中學生為主或是以本地美國中學生為主；對參加的國際學生而言，最大的差別在於英文能力及文化體驗
• Target group: Summer camps usually target both international high school students and local-based American high school students with different pursuits. To the international student participants the major differences are English proficiency and experiencing cultural differences. 
• 純粹國際學生的營隊通常會包含英文加強課程，學生的英文能力達到一定水準即可。以美國學生為主的營隊，通常認為學員嫻熟英文，僅適合英文程度頂尖的同學參加；英文程度一般的同學不建議參加
• Usually, international student summer camps will include English intensive courses, so we would recommend an intermediate level of English proficiency. For local-based American high school students, a high level of English proficiency is required to participate. International students with an intermediate level of English are not recommended to participate in camps targeting American high school students.
• 純粹國際學生的營隊雖然沒有當地的美國學生參加，卻可以接觸到世界各地的優秀青年及文化，開拓世界觀，將會是個有趣又珍貴的經驗。透過營隊的課程安排、旅遊參觀、師生交流及生活經驗等一樣可以體驗美國文化
• International student camp can be exposed to cross-nations outstanding youths and cultures from around the world, a pioneering worldview, and a fun and valuable experience. Through the curriculum, summer camp, and tourist attractions, students will have the opportunity to experience American culture. 
• 課程內容：主題營隊大多較學術性，如生物科研營、音樂營等，適合有特定興趣的學員，但較不符遊學目的。純粹以英文學習為主，學員的英文程度不限，但可能稍嫌單調，而且語文是長期功夫。理想的遊學內容最好能多樣化：英文學習、美國文化、藝術、科學、專題及參觀旅行等，淺嚐美國大學生活。若營隊能提供小型研究專案、大學承認的學分或社區服務證明等，對未來升大學也有所裨益。
• Course content: The majority of the summer camps are academically focused, such as biological research or music. This type of camp is a fit for students with special interests. Students usually expect to travel and learn simultaneously. The language learning process requires a long-term effort and sometimes might be boring. Since the experience is immersive, it will not be boring and an excellent opportunity to learn English. The ideal experience is to enhance diversity and learn about American culture, art, science, tourist attractions, and a bite of American university life. If the camp offers small research projects or community service, these credits may be useful for college applications.
• 研究專案特別能啟發學員的研發興趣及潛力，一般營隊非常少見，值得優先考慮。有心的學員可以在返校後繼續深入研究，有學員因此於科展獲獎。
• The opportunity to conduct special research projects is very rare and is a high priority for college applications. Students interested in their projects may continue their research after the summer camps. Based off their summer experiences, some students have received awards at various scientific expos.
• 提供有品質的多樣化內容，門檻頗高，大概只有著名學府辦的到。參加的學員本身英文最好在班上有中上程度。
• It has never been easy to offer a quality diversified summer program unless by reputed universities. Student participants are supposed to be with intermediate English proficiency.
• 安全：美國的營隊，特別是州立大學和家長一樣，非常重視學員安全，因為責任重大，萬一出事，難以消受。美國大學一般有校警巡邏，若活動場地和宿舍都在校園內，雖然少了通車的樂趣，但相對更為安全。州立大學還有州警巡邏，比地方警察權威。
• Security: In American camps, especially by state universities, students’ safety is a huge concern because of the liability. American universities generally have a campus patrol, particularly if the dormitories are on campus. 
• 住在學校宿舍，最好有廿四小時舍監管理，大門管制需要刷卡進入。紐約州特別規定青少年(如高中生)的宿舍，不可以有成年人(如大學生)住宿。校園內通常有免費寬頻服務，家長透過智慧型手機可以隨時和學生聯絡。住宿舍的額外好處是可以充分利用學校設施，如體育館、游泳池、健身房等
• Living in the school dormitory, there will be twenty-four hour supervision and camera surveillance. Card access is provided. New York special provisions will not allow adolescents to live in the same dormitory with college students. The campus wifi, usually free of charge, allows parents and students to contact each other any time. There are additional benefits of living on campus for school facilities such as the gym, swimming pool & etc. 
• 出門在外，強烈建議要有當地的健康保險。不是每個營隊都提供健保，一定要先確認
• Not every camp offers health insurance, so health insurance is strongly recommended for all participants. 
• 參觀旅行：國人對夏令營的期望是既遊又學，過個輕鬆且充實的暑假，所以參觀旅行是夏令營必備的重要活動。旅遊點基本要有著名景點、地標等，若能加入當地獨特活動如紐約市的百老匯歌舞劇，或是常人無緣接近的國家實驗室一窺美國強大研發能力，都會是難得的美好經驗。
• Visiting/Travel: The anticipation for the summer camps is to have a sightseeing component in addition to academic learning. An easy and relaxed summer in conjunction with fulfilling academics that is essential to the summer experience. Sightseeing and traveling is a key activity for the summer camp. Some activities include famous attractions, landmarks, and unique activities such as New York’s Broadway musicals and national laboratories. Not everyone is permitted to access these exclusive facilities, so this is a rare opportunity. 
• 安全是參觀旅行最重要的準則，如何確保學員快樂出門，安全回營是主辦單位的重任。因為人數眾多，若有額外的台灣輔導員同行照顧，更有保障
• Safety is of upmost importance during travel. The safety and security of students will be ensured better if there are Taiwanese peer counselors available.  
• 美國當地舉辦的夏令營不一定有參觀旅行，國人較不能接受；縱然有，可能也只有少數幾個點，務必先行確認
• The majority of summer camps in the United States do not always offer travel opportunities. If you are interested in traveling, be sure to confirm that your summer camp offers these opportunities.

• 費用：美國當地舉辦的夏令營學費不必然包含所有費用，有些還要申請費
• Cost: Tuition does not always contain all the required fees, sometimes the application fees are extra.
